The Artist’s Philosophy
A painting is a personal reaction to an observed moment on a pathway called life. All of us see that moment from unique perspectives based on our individual differences. As a visual artist I attempt to express a feeling of that fleeting observation with a passion and skill that will involve the viewer in my experience to make a “shared” one. For me it is more interesting and challenging to paint many different types of subjects in varied styles letting the subject lead me onto its pathway. The first stroke dictates the second. The second, the third and so on, until my brain takes over and reacts to the journey. Then the real excitement begins. There is no guarantee that every painting will work, of course. Some paths are stony, some smooth and cool. Variety is a part of the nature of things that can serve to keep us in tune with the world around us. As Chief Seattle said in 1853, “Earth does not belong to us, but we belong to the earth. All things are sacred to us.” I share his belief, if not his eloquence. I also share Helen Keller’s belief that “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” One of my adventures is painting. Come. Walk with me!
